Campaign Naming Conventions

I touched on this in my last blog, campaign naming conventions. It’s nothing complex but it’s a handy little system which I’ve developed over the years just to keep things simple.

It’s especially handy when working in a big marketing automation implementation across many regions, especially if you’re not that big that you’d start to use regionalised workspaces.

So here it is, dissected just for you guys:

FYXX-QX-REGION/PRODUCT-CAMPAIGN NAME

FYXX – The financial year for example FY17
QX – The financial quarter for example Q1
REGION or PRODUCT – could be EMEA, AMERICAS, APAC or DECKCHAIRS, BBQs etc.
CAMPAIGN NAME – This typically offers lead or objective, for example, Spring Offer 25% Off

Put that all together and here is a nice little example (using both region and product here):

FY17-Q1-APAC-BBQs-Spring Offer 25% Off

Some other variations I’ve used and seen in use.

FYXX-QX-MMM-NAME ( So FY17-Q1-JAN-Name )
YYYY-MM-NAME ( The number addict: 2017-01-Name )
NAME-YY-MM ( Backwards, note I’m not a fan as it can often get lost in the view).

One other thing we tend to do on campaigns we’ve built also ends the campaign name with ‘_JTF’ keeping it really easy to identify who built what. Some Marketing Automation Platforms (MAPs) also allow you to create custom program tags which then allow you to tag the ‘Author’ for example.

How do you name your campaigns? Let me know below J
